    Scope and Contents

Collection consists of manuscript notes taken by a student for lectures on physiology applied to pathology by F.J.V. Broussais. "Broussais was the founder of the controversial /medecine physiologique' system in the early nineteenth century. The theory had a wide following for many years but gradually succumbed to the accumulated facts regarding specific diseases. The lecture notes begin with a brief introduction to 'irritation', a concept central to broussais' system. The lectures move immediately to inflammation and specific ailments according to their organ-specific inflammations. This comprises all of the text. there is an index followed by a 'formules pratiques' for a limited group of ailments. The manuscript is in a clear hand throughout with some corrections and side notes."--Antiquarian bookseller's description.
