Scope and Content
This collection contains slides, raw data, and results from an extensive 1973-1981 study of Southern California intertidal
macrophyte and macroinvertebrate communities. The study was under the direction of Dr. Mark M. Littler and Dr. Diane S. Littler,
both of the Department of Ecology and Evolutionary Biology, University of California Irvine.
Data comes in varying forms, such as field notes, score sheets, weight sheets, transcripts, species lists, tidal heights,
and slides. The vast majority of slides are of the study's main data gathering method: photo quadrats of rocky intertidal
communities taken along transect lines from high intertidal to low intertidal. Many slides are infrared, making macrophyte
communities appear bright red. There are also a good number of aerial survey slides and slides depicting the study site and
its surroundings, as well as the research team interacting with the sites and each other. Except for the indication of quadrat
number and whether it was in the high, mid, or low intertidal, there is generally no labeling of slides with regard to organisms
present.
The collection also contains large prints of aerial photos, merged aerial survey images, maps, and charts. One of the final
products of the study appears to be maps of the island and mainland study sites labeled with dominant macrophyte communities.
This collection contains many tables that have not yet been converted to digital format.
Arrangement
Field notes, score sheets, weight sheets, transcripts, species lists, tidal heights, slides and other forms of data have been
divided into series by study site. These series have been further subdivided by month/year.
