The massacre was the result of a shootout between several Chinese men over the kidnapping of a young Chinese woman, that led to a shootout with police and the death of a civilian. As a result, a mob of rioters forced the Chinese out of the Coronel Building, where they had been hiding, to a makeshift gallows. 18 Chinese were murdered. A grand jury returned 25 indictments but only 10 men stood trial.
