Background

Biographical / historical:

Ronald H. Chapman was born on November 4, 1943. He graduated from Stagg High School in Stockton, California, and after serving in the U.S. Army, worked for Johns-Manville. After the plant closed, he began a second career with the Stockton Police Department as Senior Evidence Technician beginning in 1982; he worked for the SPD for the next 27 years.

After his retirement in 2009, Ron volunteered as a historian for the SPD. His work was important, discovering and preserving artifacts and documentation which would have been otherwise lost or forgotten. He was also a moderator and contributing member of the Stockton History Facebook group.

He collected postcards, Stockton-based ephemera, trade cards (early business cards), maps, vintage photos, including early Stockton photographers and studios, which are a part of the collection. Chapman was also a photographer; he documented many Stockton construction and demolition projects, buildings, signs, businesses, air shows at the Stockton Metropolitan Airport, as well as many other views of Stockton.

Ron Chapman died on May 21, 2019.
