    Biographical / Historical

    Roger Hagan (1934-2020) was a photographer, writer, and editor. He grew up in Arcadia, California, and graduated from Stanford University with a degree in history in 1955. During this time, he also traveled in Mexico and Europe, later publishing books of photographs from his travels titled Mexico 1953 and Cold Stone: Photographs in Europe in 1955. From 1961 to 1965, Hagan was an editor for The Correspondent, published by the Committee of Correspondence at Harvard where he was a graduate student of historian Arthur Schlesinger Jr., a teaching assistant for sociologist David Riesman, and a research assistant for psychoanalyst Erich Fromm. During the 1970s through 1990s, Hagan was active in Seattle's journalism scene, working for King Broadcasting Company and Enterprise Productions. He also opened The Word Processor Store in the 1980s, Seattle's first computer store for writers. In the early 2000s, he returned to photography, publishing and exhibiting pieces in galleries.

    Scope and Contents

    The collection consists of black and white photographic prints taken by Roger Hagan, largely from his travels during the 1950s. Series 1 includes photos from his travels to Mexico in 1953 and 1959. Series 2 includes photos from travels through Europe in 1955. Images in both series include a mix of portraits, landscape, and urban photography. Series 3 consists of black and white photographs selected by Hagan as some of his favorites from a lifetime of taking photographs. Descriptions are included for most of the images in this series.
