    Biographical Note

    Ms. Lynn Holton earned a bachelor’s degree in journalism and psychology from the Newhouse School of Communications at Syracuse University, New York. She was hired by The Recorder, a San Francisco Bay Area legal newspaper, early in her career and went on to become the newspaper's first female managing editor. Following her employment with The Recorder, Ms. Holton joined the Administrative Office of the Courts where she served as Public Information Officer from 1982 through 2012. In this capacity, she supported media relations for the Chief Justice of California, the California Supreme Court, the Judicial Council, the California Courts of Appeal and the Commission on Judicial Appointments. During her tenure she helped establish a fully staffed Public Information Office and participated in the creation and implementation of projects designed to improve public understanding of the courts.

    Scope and Content of Collection

    The Lynn Holton papers consist of 13.74 cubic feet of materials created or compiled by Lynn Holton during her service as Public Information Officer for the Administrative Office of the Courts, Judicial Council of California, between 1982 and 2012.
    Audiovisual materials within the collection date from 1996 through 2011 and include recordings of news broadcasts, oral argument and special sessions. Educational materials and other recordings produced or collected by the judicial branch are also included in this series.
    California Supreme Court files relate to judicial appointments and service, outreach projects, court history and locations and special sessions of the court. These materials date from 1959 through 2012 and include articles and clippings, biographical materials, speeches, media releases, correspondence and memoranda.
    Photographs date from 1989 to 2010 and include formal portraits of justices as well as images of special sessions and events related to high-profile opinions.
    Subject files date from 1982 through 2012 and include articles and clippings, correspondence, memoranda, reports, publications and outreach materials. Files within this series pertain to policy initiatives and legislation related to the judicial branch, public outreach and media coverage of high-profile opinions and other issues relating to the courts.
