The scrapbook documents the San Francisco Department of Public Health's Emergency Medical Service (EMS) during Yoes' employment with the division, through newspapers clippings and photographs. The EMS was formerly known as the Emergency Hospital Service. Topics include the first two groups of paramedics and the first ambulance paramedic program, 1973. An autobiography excerpt and obituary for Yoes are also included.

Biographical / historical:

William Edward "Bill" Yoes worked for the San Francisco Emergency Medical Service for many decades. He earlier served as a medical corpsman with the Marines during the Korean War before becoming a Licensed Vocation Nurse (LVN), and worked at the May T. Morrison Rehabilitation Center and then as the first male LVN at S.F. General Hospital. He joined the city's Emergency Medical Service (EMS) in 1957, working as the admitting officer at SF General; as a medical steward on the ambulances; and as Assistant Superintendent and Superintendent of the EMS. He spent the last ten years of his City and County career as the Emergency Planning Coordinator for the Mayor's Office.

Yoes was born on July 28, 1932 in Portland, OR, the oldest son of Gilliam W and Frances Starr Yoes. He had three sons with wife Patricia before the marriage ended. He met partner Doug Yule in 2004; they were together until Yoes' death in 2023.
