KPIX-TV is a CBS owned-and-operated television station, licensed to broadcast in San Francisco on channel 5. KPIX signed on the air on Dec. 22, 1948, the first television station in Northern California. It was a pioneer in local news coverage in the region, as well as home of the Oakland Athletics broadcasts during the 1980s and the Golden State Warriors during the 1990s. From 1956 to 1993, the station carried most San Francisco 49ers games locally. The station originated the concept for the entertainment and lifestyle program, Evening Magazine, which debuted on the station in August 1976 and soon expanded to other stations of Westinghouse, its then-owner. The morning talk show, People are Talking, was another KPIX creation which also went into Westinghouse syndication.
