Description
Letters of American Civil War Union soldier Hiram Farrand.
Background
Hiram Farrand, resident of Newark, New Jersey, enrolled in Company F of the 1st New York Volunteer Engineers Regiment in September 1861. In October he was commissioned the 2nd Lieutenant, and in February 1862 promoted to First Lieutenant of Company E. In December 1863 he was appointed acting regimental adjutant. In March 1864, Farrand was commissioned Captain of Company D. During his service, he took part in battles of Hilton Head, Secessionville, Coosawhatchie River, Carlton and Frampton Plantations, Morris Island, the siege of Battery Wagner, Charleston, and Fort Sumter. Wounded during the action at Bermuda Hundred, Virginia, he spent a month at the General Hospital in Chesapeake in 1864. He was mustered out on December 12, 1864, in Varina, Virginia.
