Biographical / Historical
The University of Southern California's Southern California Study Center (SC2) was an interdisciplinary center dedicated to
documenting and studying life in Southern California in relation to its regional, national, and international connections.
Much of the work produced by SC2 focused on the urban settings of the greater Los Angeles area and its people, culture, and
socio-geography through its three initiatives: information and research, outreach, and curriculum.
SC2 was closely tied to the Department of Geography, and the School of Policy, Planning and Development within the College
of Letters, Arts and Sciences at the University of Southern California. SC2's academic director was urban geographer Michael
Dear who worked at USC from 1986-2009. Dear described SC2's central purpose was to "describe, explain, monitor and guide the
regional transformations in socio-cultural, political and economic life in Southern California as they evolve through time
and space".
