Administrative History
"Long Beach Lambda Democratic Club was formed as a Democratic Club under the guidelines and affiliation of the California
Democratic Party and the California Democratic Council with the purpose of furthering the human and civil rights of all minorities,
especially those of lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgendered people.... Long Beach Lambda Democratic Club started in late
1977 in response to the Briggs Initiative, an anti-gay-and-lesbian initiative to bar gay and lesbian teachers from the classroom.
After Briggs was defeated, the club continued as a political voice for the community, recognized by both the California Democratic
Party and the California Democratic Council, and soon after its inception received the award for the largest growing club
in California.... The Long Beach Lambda Democratic Club strives to continue to be a voice not only for gay and lesbian, bisexual
and transgendered individuals, but also as a proponent of human and civil rights for all minorities and an advocate for progressive
issues."
