    Biography / Administrative History

    Naturalist, author, conservationist. Considered a precursor of environmentalist movement. Through his numerous books and articles, which emphasize importance of wilderness experiences to cultivation of spiritual values and maintenance of high-quality civilization, Muir brought appreciation of natural environment to national consciousness. Instrumental in creation of National Park system, Muir was directly involved in creation of Yosemite, Sequoia, Grand Canyon, and Mt. Rainier parks. He also instrumental in the creation of the Sierra Club.

    Scope and Content of Collection

    This collection of Muir’s personal library is curated alphabetically by author in his own bookcases from his Martinez, California home. Most remarkable about this collection is that many volumes contain Muir’s own notations in the form of drawings, marginalia, and personal indexes. Researchers can follow the genesis of his idea from when he read them to articles and books he wrote.
