    Historical Note

    The Inter-University Labor Education Committee created the Health Plan Consultants Committee in 1953 in order to research and test viable health care programs for laborers in the Los Angeles region. The Los Angeles County Medical Association (LACMA) was one of the groups who participated in this endeavor. The Committee on Multiphasic Screening was created to coordinate the physicians' activities regarding the screenings. The group conducted health screenings of employees and members of participating companies and unions.
    Other participants in this endeavor include, but are not limited to: California Medical Association; University California, Department of Industrial Relations; Los Angeles County Heart Association; Los Angeles Tuberculosis and Health Association; Welfare Planning Council, Los Angeles Region; and International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers, Local Union 1710.

    Scope and Content

    The collection contains manuscripts, correspondence and ephemera. The manuscripts consist of 36 items arranged in alphabetical order by author. The material was created by the Health Plan Consultants Committee, the Committee on Multiphasic Screening and groups and individuals involved in research on multtiphasic screenings. The correspondence consists of 80 items arranged alphabetically by author. The majority of this section contains letters written by doctors and administrators involved in the multiphasic screening program. The ephemera consists of 29 items related to research into mutltiphasic screening and general health topics.
    Notable participants include: Dr. Edgar F. Mauer, former president of the Los Angeles County Heart Association, Dr. Russel V. Lee, and Dr. Ian Macdonald.

    Box 2 contains ephemera, arranged alphabetically by type.
