Identifier:
Series II.
Dates:
1864-1874
Extent:
20 linear feet (13 boxes)
Scope and content:

Series II comprises materials related to the execution of the plates and illustrations for Voyage d'exploration à la mer Morte, à Petra, et sur la rive du Jourdain by Honoré d'Albert Luynes (Paris: Arthus Bertrand, 1874), the official record of Luynes's expeditions.

The Voyage was published in three volumes of text: v. 1. Relation du voyage par M. le Duc de Luynes; v. 2. De Petra à Palmyre par M. Vignes and Voyage de Jérusalem à Karak et à Chaubak par MM. Mauss e Sauvaire; v. 3. Géologie par M. L. Lartet; and an accompanying Atlas. Volume 1 comprises Luynes's travel journal from the 1864 edition. Volume 2 contains Vignes's account of the expedition and includes notes on altitude, latitude, longitude, meteorological observations, and other measurements and observations of sites visited. The second part of Volume 2 is dedicated to the 1866 expedition undertaken by Mauss and Sauvaire to explore and record the Crusader castles in the area now known as Transjordan, especially Kerak Castle at Al-Karak and Montréal in Shoubak. Volume 3 is devoted to the geological and paleontological findings made by Lartet on the 1864 expedition.

Much of the series deals with the reproduction of the visual documentation of Luyne's expeditons. Materials related to Charles Nègre's execution in photogravure of Louis Vignes's photographs from the 1864 expedition primarily comprise incomplete sets of Nègre's working proof prints and test proof prints, while those pertaining to the engraving the photographs Henri Sauvaire made during the 1866 expedition provide a fuller context for the reproduction process and the working relationship between Luynes and the engravers. These materials include correspondence, sample prints by engravers Gustave Dejardin and Paul-Émile Placet, and contracts, lists of payments, and receipts for payment. For discussions and further details on the collaborators Luynes planned to enlist for the publication see Lettres de Mr. Vignes et autres, Series I, Box 1.

Additional visual elements of the publication include plans, maps, and small inter-text illustrations. Found here are materials related to the maps and plans produced by members of the expeditions including their hand-drawn maps, copy photographs of maps and plans, proof prints, final prints, and correspondence and notes regarding the printing of the maps and plans. Also present are copy photographs for intertextual illustrations made from inscriptions and rubbings and drawings pf sculpture and geographical features made during the expeditons or garnered from other sources.
