Description
The collection contains information about the two hunger strikes at
UCSB that led, among other results, to the ethnic and gender studies undergraduate requirements and the eventual Ph.D program
in Chicana/o Studies. The collection is made up of collected news clippings detailing issues and events leading to, during,
and the aftermath of the hunger strikes of 1989 and 1994 as well as information concerning ethnic minorities and racial issues
at
UCSB. The collection is made up of articles, newspaper clippings, publications, digital photo prints, and flyers. Included is
a notarized copy of the agreement signed May 6, 1994 by the university administration and the hunger strikers. It is noteworthy
that a copy of
UCSB Chancellor Barbara Uehling's statement of commitment to "El Centro Concept" dated April 25,1989 is included. The collection
also illuminates the internal development of the Chicano Studies Department. In particular, the collection highlights the
1994 struggle by the student organization El Congreso to voice its support for the ethnic studies requirement and its opposition
to the University of California's interference in the process.
