    Historical or Biographical Note

The San Francisco Maritime State Historic Park was established in 1956 and existed under this name until 1977 when it became the National Maritime Museum, part of the Golden Gate National Recreation Area. In 1988 the Maritime Unit became a separate national park called the San Francisco Maritime National Historical Park, the name it is still known by today.
The San Francisco Maritime National Historical Park (SFMNHP) provides services for millions of visitors annually and acts as a custodian for historic vessels, small watercraft, museum artifacts, archives and a maritime library. The SFMNHP is responsible for maintaining 35 acres of urban parkland which include the Aquatic Park Bathhouse (a National Historic Landmark which serves as a museum exhibit facility), the Hyde Street Pier (where the historic vessels are moored), and the Haslett Warehouse. Five of the historic vessels moored on Hyde Street Pier are designated National Historic Landmarks: ALMA, BALCLUTHA, C.A. THAYER, EUREKA and HERCULES. The park also operates a library and archives in a Historic Landmark building at nearby Fort Mason which houses a variety of documents, vessel plans, photographs, motion picture film, books, periodicals and oral histories.
The Maritime Museum is located in the Aquatic Park Bathhouse on Beach Street. The Bathhouse building was built in 1939 as a joint project of the City of San Francisco and the New Deal Works Progress Administration (WPA), and is the focal point of the Aquatic Park Historic Landmark District. The Maritime Museum now contains interpretive material about Pacific Coast maritime history, including ship models, permanent exhibits, and traveling exhibits.

    Collection Scope and Content

A Pacific Legacy slide show, December 11, 1991, (SAFR 23341, P92-105) is comprised of slides of photographs in the San Francisco Maritime National Historical Park collection, created by the Park's Photo Lab for an exhibit coinciding with the publication of the book, A Pacific Legacy, by Wayne Bonnett with an introduction by Robert A. Weinstein. The collection has been processed to the collection level and is open for use without restrictions.
Contains slides of photographic material found in the San Francisco Maritime National Historical Park collection that were used in the book, A Pacific Legacy, published in 1991. These slides were used for the December 11, 1991, opening of an exhibit of photographs from the book A Pacific Legacy in the lobby of the Maritime Museum. The event included a reception, book signing, exhibit opening and slide show. It was a collaboration of the San Francisco Maritime National Historical Park, The National Maritime Museum Association, The Golden Gate National Park Association and the Associates of the National Maritime Museum Library.
The photographs in the book were taken by various photographers, including Wilhelm Hester, Walter A. Scott, and Hiram Hudson Morrison. The images chosen for the book span 1850-1950, and were selected as a representation of Pacific Coast maritime history. Some of the photographs in the book have the photograph call number cited, and all of the photographs in the book have captions.
Images in this collection include various views of tall ships, steamers, tugs and naval vessels; interior views, deck views, coastal views, wrecks, vessel launches, and vessel construction and maintenance.
The following is a list of photographs used in the slide show and corresponding San Francisco Maritime National Historical Park call numbers.
