Scope and Content Note

Consists of paper files, photographic prints and negatives, audiocassette recordings, and videocassettes created and collected by the SFMNHP Project Manager primarily during the C.A. THAYER major restoration project. Also contains documents concerning drydockings prior to and after the 2003-2007 rebuild construction work.
Primarily contains contracts, correspondence, memorandums, reports, and other documents concerning various aspects of the major C.A. THAYER restoration project, including timber acquisition, architect and engineer services, compliance, funding, and more. Contains recorded meetings with, email correspondence with, and documents created by contractors involved in the project, including Bay Ship & Yacht Co.; BMT Designers & Planners, Inc.; Allen C. Rawl, Inc.; NPS Denver Service Center; and Defense Logistics Agency and their subcontractor Sylvan Forest Products.
Also includes documents and photographs related to C.A. THAYER drydockings in the 1980s, 1995, 1998, 2001, and 2011.

Scope and Content Note

Consists of completion reports, logs, and a survey completed during the 1998 drydocking of C.A. THAYER, contract number 1443 CX-8520-98-005. Includes the daily log of shipyard upkeep completed by SFMNHP Contracting Officer's Representative Fred Sheppard, October 9-November 24, 1998, and the inspector's daily log completed by SFMNHP shipwright John Conway, October 27-November 17, 1998. Also includes a report on the survey of the bottom of C.A. THAYER while in drydock, October 28, 1998, and the independent government cost estimate for the drydocking.

Scope and Content Note

Consists of the statement of work for the 1998 drydocking of C.A. THAYER and a memorandum on the final inspection report of the drydocking. Also includes correspondence related to the 1998 National Maritime Museum Association's C.A. THAYER condition survey report (see Subsubsubseries 1.1.5.3, File Unit 1, for the final report).
Other documents include correspondence and memorandums related to early plans for the restoration of C.A. THAYER (1993-1994); reported leaks and hogging (1995-1998); 1995 pentachlorophenol sampling tests; 1995 safety inspection; and a four year timeline for rehabilitation (no date).

Includes September 2001 correspondence with Bay Ship & Yacht Co. regarding repairing the damage caused during the accident. Includes correspondence regarding sources for timber; lumber and timber lists; draft BMT Designers & Planners, Inc. report on the September 8-10 inspection of C.A. THAYER, 1994; and Sibert Technology paper tracing sheets from aft hawse drilling, March 26 and April 1, 1998. Other documents include a memorandum on the subject of a measurement system detecting hog in C.A. THAYER, July 22, 1997; copies of the existing condition drawings from the 1991 C.A. Scope and Content Note

Consists of documents primarily related to contracts with BMT Designers & Planners, Inc. (D&P) for architect and engineer services during the planning and construction phases of the C.A. THAYER restoration, including drafts of task order GS-23F-0024K scope of services as well as detailed cost proposals from D&P. Also includes cost proposals from Allen C. Rawl, Inc. for subcontractor tasks and from Richard K. Anderson, Jr. of Cultural Resource Documentation Services for HABS/HAER documentation drawings. File Unit 02.  Documentation photographs, 2003

Scope and Content Note

Consists of digital documentation photographs and videos of C.A. THAYER prior to her major restoration.

The contents of the CDs are as follows:

  • A: Photographs of the quarter deck cabin; quarter deck hardware documentation and steering gear removal; starboard midship deck pattern; and general topside views.
  • B: Photographs of the hold ballast and stanchions; main deck hardware documentation and removal of the capstan, windlass chain, and anchor; and the removal of the bowsprit, mizzen, and foremast.
  • D: Deckhouse documentation, removal, and general photographs as well as videos of the removal of the deckhouse, foremast, main deck, mizzenmast, and quarter deck. Also contains spreadsheets with the interferences inventory (issue 04) and electrical inventory (issue 02).

File Unit 04.  Fastenings x-ray images, 2004 October

Extent: 40 digital files (2.898 GB).
Physical Description: 2 compact discs with of 190 various file types. The files on the CD were used to export 40 TIFF files of the x-ray images.

Scope and Content Note

Consists of digital data from the computerized radiography testing (x-rays) of a selection of the center-line fastenings completed by Conam Pacific Coast Testing. The testing produced 40 images of the keel, keelson, and riders at frames 10, 11, 31, 51, and aft of 51. The images were used to determine which fasteners needed to be replaced.
Note: Because the images are only viewable using the CD software, the processing archivist exported the images to TIFF files and saved them in a separate folder.

Consists of electronic documents related to 38 HABS/HAER drawings of C.A. THAYER (HAER No. CA-61) produced by Richard K. Anderson, Jr. of Cultural Resource Documentation Services under contract to BMT Designers & Planners, Inc., 2003-2006.

There are six subfolders:

  • CAD files: original MicroStation v8.1 CAD files.
  • CADREFS: original MicroStation v8.1 CAD files essential for displaying and plotting drawings in CAD.
  • RASTERREFS: raster reference files essential for displaying and plotting drawings in CAD.
  • PLTDRIVER: HPGL/2 plotter driver file for MicroStation v8.1 set to use with the THAYER drawings.

Collected from the office of Robbyn Jackson, Chief of Cultural Resources and Museum Management. Prior becoming Chief of CRMM in July 2004, Robbyn Jackson worked as a historical architect in the NPS Pacific West Region office. Her primary role in the C.A. THAYER restoration project was related to compliance. She helped to develop NEPA environmental assessment documents and National Historic Preservation Act Section 106 documents.

Subseries 2.2.  Chief of Cultural Resources and Museum Management digital files, 2002-2016 (bulk 2004-2007)

Consists of electronic files created and collected by the SFMNHP Chief of Cultural Resources and Museum Management concerning the C.A. THAYER restoration project.
Four subfolders located within the original folder collected from the Chief's computer desktop have been arranged into File Units. They primarily contain photographs of C.A. THAYER's construction in progress and C.A. THAYER's 2007 return to Hyde Street Pier. Also includes material related the Park's acquisition of WAWONA (built 1897; schooner, 3m) artifacts for use in the C.A. THAYER restoration project.

There are also 114 digital files in Series 2.2 that were not originally organized into folders by the Chief which consist of various documents related to C.A. THAYER projects including:

  • Environmental assessment and finding of no significant impact (2002).
  • Scope of work and technical specifications draft for the 2011 drydocking.

Scope and Content Note

Consists of digital photographs of artifacts from the schooner WAWONA in Seattle, Washington. In February 2011, SFMNHP rigger Courtney Andersen and shipwright Jeffrey Morris went to Seattle to select pieces of the dismantled WAWONA to be used in the C.A. THAYER restoration either as is or for patterning. The File Unit also includes a "Proposal for using Artifacts and Material Salvaged from the Schooner Wawona for use on Reconstructed Schooner C.A. Thayer"; list of Wawona artifacts taken for C. A. Thayer project; correspondence with Emmett Smith of Northwest Seaport; and correspondence between SFMNHP staff.
