Background
- Scope and content:
-
Robert Bartlett's 3rd volume of his diary covers the time perion March 16 to November 11, 1852. As with the previous 2 diaries, the daily entries describe the weather and give a brief discription of his activities during the day. From May 8 to August 27 he is on the fishing boat "Delas" on the Grand Banks. In March he tells of a letter from his brother, George Bartlett, who is in San Francisco, offering to pay for the cost of passage to his brother, Thomas, to join him in San Francisco. Bartlett also tells of the departure of three men from the town, James B. Stetson, Noah P Burgess and John Alden Sampson, bound for San Francisco. On Oct 28, Bartlett talks of going to California but this is the only mention of his personal plans in this respect. On October 29 Daniel Websters funeral is held in a neighboring town. The Diary ends with a poem written to Bartlett from Robert Bruce Drew, "Parting Words to a Friend" implying that Drew was also leaving for California. Loose in the front of the diary are photographs of 2 boys and a girl all taken in San Francisco.
