    Content Description

    This collection consists of a scrapbook of newspaper columns written by Waldemar P. Scherer for The Mankato Free Press (Minnesota) titled Overseas Mail. Interleaved with the scrapbook are letters from servicemen thanking him for writing the column and what it means to them to receive news from home. The collection also contains photocopies of letters written by Waldemar to his son Sergeant Richard (Dick) Peter Scherer of the 509th US Marine Corps.

    Biographical / Historical

    Waldemar P. Scherer was born on December 8, 1889 in Mankato, Minnesota to his parents George William Scherer and Minna Manderfeld. He remained living there and married Wilamine "Minnie" Hanson in 1916. They had five children; Robert, William, Richard, Betty, and Waldemar, Jr. Included in the collection are letters to Richard while he was serving as a Marine in the Second World War. Waldemar worked as an "advertising man" for Standard Oil Company and wrote for the Mankato (Minnesota) Free Press in a series of columns titled "Overseas Mail." Waldemar passed away May 16, 1970 in Mankato.
