Biographical / Historical
Waldemar P. Scherer (12/8/1889 - 5/16/1970) was born in Mankato, Minnesota to his parents George William Scherer and Minna
Manderfeld. He remained living there and married Wilamine "Minnie" Hanson in 1916. They had five children; Robert, William,
Richard, Betty, and Waldemar, Jr.
Included in the collection are letters to his son Sergeant Richard Peter "Dick" Sherer, United States Marine Corps, while
he was serving in the Second World War. Waldemar worked as an "advertising man" for Standard Oil Company and wrote for the
Mankato (Minnesota) Free Press in a series of columns titled "Overseas Mail." Waldemar passed away at the age of 81 in Mankato.

Content Description
This collection consists of a scrapbook of newspaper columns written by Waldemar P. Scherer for The Mankato Free Press (Minnesota)
titled "Overseas Mail." Interleaved within the scrapbook are letters from servicemen thanking him for writing the column and
what it means to them to receive news from home. The collection also contains photocopies of letters written by Waldemar to
his son Sgt. Richard P. Scherer, USMC of the 509th Marine Regiment.
