George Jackson

Scope and Contents

This series primarily contains materials related to Thorne's representation of George Jackson while he was imprisoned at San Quentin State Prison and Soledad State Prison from 1961 until his death in 1971. Also included are materials related to Thorn's representation of Angela Davis, his management of the Soledad Brothers Defense Committee Trustee account, and the publication of Jackson's book, Soledad Brother .

Processing Information

In 2011 Special Collections staff opened the majority of the previously resricted material in the George Jackson series. Of the material that remains restricted, the restriction period was lengthened by 10 years (from 2024 to 2034). Restricted folders in boxes 90, 93, and 99 were moved to box 123 in order to allow access to the other materials in these boxes.

Also included is a newspaper photo of Angela Davis with an illustration George Jackson did on the back: a manacled arm with broken chain and the words "The Gravedigger is coming armed." Copies of responses to many of these letters by John Thorne and Fay Stender. 2 original letters from Joan Hammer. (Mother-in-law of George Jackson cellmate and disciple James E. Carr. Carr was assassinated for allegedly stealing funds from the Soledad Brothers Defense Fund.) When A. Davis was released on bail, she spent her first nights of freedom at the house in San Jose owned by Joan Hammer, where Carr lived with his wife Betsy.
