Abstract:

Philip E. Bailey was a Lieutenant in the United States military, who was stationed in China during the final years of World War II. The collection contains a set of Chinese porcelain soup bowls, saucers and soup spoons made during the Guangxu period (1875-1908) with a card stating they are from President and Madame Chiang.

Background

Scope and content:

The Philip E. Bailey Collection consists of a boxed set of Chinese porcelain from the Jianhua Porcelain Co., containing two soup bowls, two saucers, and two soup spoons, all with markings stating they were made during the Guangxu period of the Qing Dynasty, which lasted from 1875-1908. The set also contains a card, which has a stamped seal, or chop, mark on it and reads "With Greetings of the Season from President and Madame Chiang."

Biographical / historical:

Philip E. Bailey was born on April 27th, 1923. He was drafted in the United States military in 1943, and was stationed in China at the end of World War II working as a military police officer. While in China, he met an eight-year-old local boy, Mario Machado, who he grew fond of and made arrangements with his parents to adopt him and bring him to America where he might have a better education and more opportunities for his future. Machado lived with Bailey for two years in Los Angeles, before legal issues caused the adoption to fall through and he was sent back to China.

While stationed in China, Bailey also became involved in the Boy Scout movement, starting the first American troop in China after the war. He was active in the Scouts for over 60 years, serving as a Scoutmaster and amassing a collection of Scout uniforms from around the world which are now located at the International Scouting Museum in Las Vegas.

After retuning from China, Bailey spent a period of time working for the Los Angeles Police Department, and retired to Westlake Village, California, where he passed away in 2006.
