Manuscript is a photostat of the original, dictated by Joel P. Walker to R. A. Thompson of Santa Rosa, California and handwritten by Thompson in 1878. Walker (born 1797) was a soldier under General Jackson in Alabama and Florida, and was a pioneer to Oregon and California in the 1840s.
- Biographical / historical:

Joel P. Walker (1797 November 20 - 1879 June 25), with his wife Mary Young, her sister Martha Young, and four or five children, were among the earliest overland emigrants to Oregon, arriving in 1840. The Walker family later moved to Sutter's Fort in California, arriving on 1841 October 22. Walker was later elected to be a delegate to the 1849 State Constitution for California, representing Sonoma County. Walker published an account of his journey and life in California A Pioneer of Pioneers: Narrative of Adventures Thro' Alabama, Florida, New Mexico, Oregon, California, &c., republished in 1953.
