    Scope and Content of Collection

Annexation Certificates of Completion (1946-1973) consists of one record carton of resolutions and maps documenting the annexation of unincorporated territory into the cities of El Cajon and Escondido. Under the Annexation of Uninhabited Territory Act of 1939 (California Stats. 1939, Ch. 297) cities were able to deem lands adjacent to their borders uninhabited for the purpose of annexation. Each certificate consists of several documents including a deposition from the City Clerk, legal description of land, list of actions taken including written notice, published notice, open council meeting, filing with the secretary of state, and attachments. Attachments often include folded maps. Ordinance numbers can be found within each record but are not prominently displayed on the first page. Records are arranged alphabetically by city and chronologically within.
