Background
Sir John Betjeman (1906-1984) was an English poet, writer, and broadcaster; he was Poet
Laureate from 1972 to 1984. Betjeman also campaigned extensively to preserve Victorian
architecture and a founding member of The Victorian Society. Morchard Bishop was the
pseudonym of Oliver Stoner; he was an English novelist, reviewer, translator, and man of
letters.
