    Biographical / Historical

Cal Poly students have been active in campus life from the time the first student clubs for athletics and debating were formed in 1903 (the same year the school opened). As early as the 1905-06 academic year, students elected student body presidents. From 1905-1921 the presidents alternately identified either with the Senior Class or with the Student Body.
The Student Affairs Committee (SAC) was formed by 1921, and from 1921 to 1930 the Senior Class President was also the head of the SAC.
In 1930, the Student Affairs Committee became the Student Affairs Council and consisted of 20 students and six faculty members, including the president and vice president of the student body, the cheerleader, football team manager, presidents of each of the six classes, and one representative from each of the major clubs. From 1933 to 1939 SAC was responsible for the administration of the student body affairs.
In 1939, the student government was organized as the Associated Student Body (ASB) and SAC was retained as the board of directors for ASB, acting as liaison with the university administration as well as the legislative body of student government. In 1964 ASB incorporated and renamed the Associated Students, Incorporated (ASI).
Associated Students, Inc. is a student run, non-profit auxiliary organization at Cal Poly. They are a corporate, legal entity responsible for the administration and oversight of all ASI-managed facilities, programs, and services funded with University Union and ASI student mandatory fees. ASI represents the collective student voice through student governance. Every student is a part of ASI.
ASI managed facilities include the Children's Center (opened in 1973), the Recreation Center, and the Julian A. McPhee College Union (opened in 1971, renamed the University Union in 1973). The University Union houses ASI student officers and members of their staff, as well as the ASI Business Office, which provides support and service to ASI programs and student shareholders.
ASI Club Services provides assistance, expertise, and club funding for currently chartered Cal Poly Recognized Student Organizations (RSOs). Club services staff provide administrative support tracking documents such as charters, bylaws, and club funding.
