Record Series 85 contains the administrative files of the Executive Office of the UCLA Academic Senate, known as the Academic Senate (Los Angeles Division). The Academic Senate was codified in 1920 and an unique part of the University of California system. It serves as a "vehicle" through which the faculty participates in the shared governance of the university. The Senate is composed of "ladder-rank" (tenured or tenured-rank) faculty and the deans, provosts, chancellor, and president of the university.
The Academic Senate faculty are responsible for determining admission criteria; approving and supervising all courses, curricula, and academic programs; determining degree requirements; advising the administration on faculty appointments and promotions; and advising the administration on budget and financial planning.
