Historical or Biographical Note
KANSAS (built 1905; battleship: U.S. Navy), a Connecticut-class battleship (BB-21), was built by New York Shipbuilding Company
in Camden, NJ. She was launched on August 12, 1905 and commissioned in April 1907. She was part of the Great White Fleet which
circumnavigated the world in 1907-1909. KANSAS was decommissioned in 1921.
Collection Scope and Content
The Kansas (built 1905; battleship: U.S. Navy) photograph, 1907-1909, (SAFR 24440, P15-002) is comprised of a photograph of
the United States Navy battleship KANSAS during the cruise of the Great White Fleet around the world. The collection has been
processed to the Collection level and is open for use.
Contains one black-and-white photographic print, 3.5 x 9.25 in., of KANSAS (built 1905; battleship: U.S. Navy) in the stream,
starboard quarter view, during the Great White Fleet's world circumnavigation, 1907-1909. Other United States Navy vessels
that were also part of the Great White Fleet are in the distance. Motor launches are underway between the vessels. Two lifeboats
are tied up at the stern of KANSAS. Photographer's number 374. Ship specifications are handwritten on the verso.
