Background

Scope and content:

Consists of accounting records for the railroad including balance sheets of general ledger (form 141), cash receipts and disbursements, a betterments account ledger, a station agent's book, bills collectable, and an interline car service account. Also includes train orders.

Biographical / historical:

Corvallis and Eastern Railroad was incorporated December 15, 1897. This road consisted of roughly 141 miles extending easterly from Yaquina, on the Oregon coast, via Corvallis to Idanha, Oregon. It was built by predecessor companies between 1877 and 1890. These companies starting with the earliest were Willamette Valley & Coast Rail Road [and the] Oregon Central & Eastern Railroad Company.

Through stock ownership the Corvallis & Eastern came under control of the Southern Pacific Company in 1907, but operated its own organization from about January 24, 1898 until formally sold to the Southern Pacific Company on July 1, 1915. The road had seven locomotives of which three went into the SP roster, the balance being scrapped by the SP without renumbering.

Various sections of the former C&E have been abandoned: Albany to Shelburn, thirteen miles, in 1930; Gates to Idanha, about twenty-one miles, in 1949; Altree (near Toldeo) to Yaquina, 7.7 miles, in 1937. The Corvallis & Eastern was dissolved on January 13, 1916.
