Abstract: The collection contains recorded and transcribed interviews conducted by Douglas Daniels regarding the life and career of musician Lester Young in preparation for his book, Lester Leaps In: The Life and Times of Lester 'Pres' Young, and also regarding the history of the Santa Barbara Blues Society.

Biographical Note

Douglas Daniels is a Professor Emeritus of both the Department of Black Studies and the Department of History at the University of California, Santa Barbara. He received his BA in Political Science from the University of Chicago, and M.A. and Ph. D. in History from the University of California, Berkeley. His research interests include African American history, the history of jazz, African popular music, and the use of oral history and photography in the study of culture.
Dr. Daniels research and contributions have been recognized by a variety of organizations. He has received the San Francisco African American Historical and Cultural Society Keynote Speaker Award in 2005 for Pioneer Urbanites, a Fulbright Fellow African Regional Research Program grant for research in Kenya and Tanzania, and a Fulbright Fellowship for teaching African American History and the History of Jazz in Japan. He also works as a consultant for the National Endowment for the Humanities, the National Museum of African American Music, and for Carnegie Hall.

Interviews range from the beginning of Lester Young's career to the end with the decline of his health, from the perspective of those that knew him. Some printed transcriptions have marked notes made by Douglas Daniels.
