Background

Scope and content:

The Office Records document administrative operations, public relations efforts, financial transactions, and correspondence. Clippings from newspapers and tear sheets from magazines in which Cohen's projects were featured, and some photographs are included.

The majority of the Projects Records series documents Cohen's projects spanning the years 1956-1978, and documents his work through drawings, photographs and slides, and administrative files. The majority of projects are residential in nature. Major Projects within this series include the winning entry for the Diamond Heights/Red Rock competition (1962), Bitterbrush at Lake Tahoe (1971) and San Francisco International Airport Garage 'D' (1996), where a significant number of plans and drawings are retained.

Biographical / historical:

Bernard Clyde Cohen was born in Brooklyn, New York on December 4, 1929, he was known by his middle name Clyde. Clyde attended MIT and then transferred to UC Berkeley, studying under Dean William Wurster, where he obtained a master's degree in architecture. Shortly after graduation he entered business with Jim Levorsen.

Among his noted projects, done mostly with the modernist aesthetic, Clyde designed the award-winning Red Rock Hill (1962) condominiums in the Diamond Heights District of San Francisco. In later years he turned his attention to commercial projects, ultimately working as a lead project architect for the City of San Francisco. His commercial work included buildings for TRW (n.d.) and facilities within the San Francisco Airport (1996).
