Abstract: This collection contains the papers of John Howe Gleason, Pomona College professor of English History.
Gleason led a distinguished teaching career and authored texts on English and British history. He travelled extensively in
Europe, studied at Oxford University,
and earned his Ph.D. from Harvard University. This collection contains book reviews authored by Gleason, reviews by others
of his own work, research notes,
correspondence, news clippings, navy training manuals, and maps.

Biography / Administrative History
John Howe Gleason was a professor of Engligh History at Pomona College, and at one time served as the chairman of the History
Department. Gleason attended Oxford
University and earned his Ph.D. from Harvard University. His historical interests included the political affairs and government
of Early Modern England and Europe,
and he authored "The Justices of the Peace in England, 1558-1640" (1969) and "The Genesis of Russophobia in Great Britain;
a study of the interaction of policy and
opinion" (1950). In 1970, he was the recipient of Pomona College's highest faculty honor, the Wig Distinguished Professor
Award for excellence in teaching.

Scope and Contents
Collection includes correspondence, book reviews written by Gleason, collected book reviews for his book "The Justices of
the Peace in England, 1558 to 1640: a
later Eirenacha," publications, WWII naval training manuals, clippings, notes, maps, and charts. Notable items include Gleason's
research notes for "Justices of the Peace"
and clippings from the Claremont Courier newspaper relating to World War II.
