Biographical / Historical
Marjorie (Widmoyer) McKinstry (1922-2002), was born in Oklahoma and earned a degree in
Business Administration from the University of Texas. Neal McKinstry (1919-2007) was born in
Jackson, Wyoming and earned a degree in Ranch Management from Colorado A & M and served
in the Army during World War II. Neal later worked for the Soil Conservation Service, which
was part of the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA), from 1945 to 1974.
The two met while Neal was stationed in Texas during World War II. After marrying in 1945,
Neal and Marjorie moved to Montana for two years before relocating to Briggsdale, Colorado.
While living in Briggsdale, the couple bought their first Arabian horse in 1949 named Ramly
(Rabiyas x Ferdana) through auction. The horse had been bred at the Kellogg Ranch in Pomona,
California during the time it was used as a Remount Depot for the U.S. Cavalry.
Neal and Marjorie McKinstry later moved to Kremling, Colorado and finally settled north of
Craig, Colorado in 1959 where they bought 230 acres, which would be home to the McKinstry
Arabians. In 1960, the couple bought the filly Famyr and over the next several years added
other horses, including Cythera, Sue-Zee and Zeus. Marjorie researched pedigrees while Neal
did much of the work with the horses. Two of the couple's horses, Pico Bay Bee and Scharif,
were competitive in showings and won trophies and other awards. In 1978, Scharif was named
the U.S. National Champion in Formal Driving. In the mid-1970s, Neal also began competing in
trail riding events with Zeus.
Neal and Marjorie retired from breeding in 1982 and later moved to Fruita, Colorado.
However, the couple still stayed active in the Arabian horse community. For example, Neal
rode Schar Royal who won the IAHA (International Arabian Horse Association) Competitive
Trail Championship in 1993.
Marjorie McKinstry died on April 16, 2002, and Neal McKinstry died several years later on
April 30, 2007.
