    Abstract: These shirts were produced to commemorate gay and lesbian parades, marches, gatherings, organizations, and AIDS-related groups or events. A sample of subjects includes San Francisco's Lesbian and Gay Freedom Day Parades and Celebrations, the San Francisco International Lesbian and Gay Film Festival, Queer Nation, the Gay Games, and FrontRunners.

    Access

    The collection is available for use during San Francisco History Center hours, with photographs available during Photo Desk hours. Collections that are stored offsite should be requested 48 hours in advance.

    Publication Rights

    All requests for permission to publish or quote from manuscripts must be submitted in writing to the City Archivist. Permission for publication is given on behalf of the San Francisco Public Library as the owner of the physical items.

    Provenance

    The first 54 items were donated to the San Francisco Public Library by Nancy Tucker in May 1994, 1998. Items 55-99 were donated by Joan Annsfire and Jim Van Buskirk between 1998-2013. The Frameline 38 shirt was donated by Jeff Thomas, 2014. The "one in every minyan" shirt was donated by Nancy Silverrod, 2015. The "Visual Aid" shirt (102) was donated by Julie Blankenship, 2016. The San Francisco LGBT Center shirt (103) was donated to the Hormel Center in 2002. The "Giovanni's Room" (104) and "Read My Lips" (105) T-shirts were donated by Tim Wilson in 2017. The Amy Sueyoshi (106) shirt was donated by Jim Van Buskirk in 2017. Shirts 107 and 108 have no accession information. Shirts 109 and 110 (The Lion Pub) were donated by Frank Serchia. Shirts 111-124 have no accession information. Shirts 125-130 were donated by Ken Maley, May 2019. Shirts 131-133 were donated by Tim Wilson, June 2019. Shirt 134 was donated by David Madruga, May 2023.

    In October 2015, Eric Gonzaba photographed the collection (items 1-100 at that time) for the website: Wearing Gay History.

    Nancy Tucker collected T-shirts from events she attended.

A sample of subjects includes San Francisco's Lesbian and Gay Freedom Day Parades and Celebrations, the San Francisco International Lesbian and Gay Film Festival, Queer Nation, the Gay Games, street fairs (Folsom, Castro, and Dore Alley), and FrontRunners.
