Biographical / Historical
George W. Barlow (1929 – 2007) was an animal behaviorist, ichthyologist, and evolutionary biologist with a specialization
in cichlid fishes. Barlow was a member of the UC Berkeley faculty in the department of integrative biology from 1966 until
he retired in 1993. Barlow led the campus's animal behavior undergraduate and graduate programs. Barlow authored more than
160 scientific articles and three books, including "The Cichlid Fishes: Nature's Grand Experiment in Evolution" (2000). He
was a fellow of the American Behavior Society and served as its president in 1979, and was a fellow of the American Association
for the Advancement of Science and of the California Academy of Sciences. He served on the board of governors of the American
Society of Ichthyologists and Herpetologists from 1970 until 1975, and was a member of the American Society of Zoologists.
He was awarded a Miller Professorship at UC Berkeley in 1972.

Papers of George W. Barlow, ichthyologist, ethologist and evolutionary biologist and expert on cichlid fishes dating from
1950-2009. Includes correspondence, research files, manuscript and publication files, notebooks and binders of data sets and
research studies, illustrations, photographs and slides.
