Background

Scope and content:

The Tragic Book project archive contains the nine issues of the series, along with files on each participating artist, book maquettes, preparatory drawings, correspondence, and other papers relating to the production of each book.

Biographical / historical:

Christopher Wilde started the Tragic Book series in 1993, and it produced nine issues in twelve years, with a stated subject matter of "things that are so tragic that they are funny or beautiful or poignant." The project was a highly collaborative and non-commercial endeavor by contemporary artists. Over one hundred artists contributed over the years, many to multiple issues.

The first few issues were zine-like, eventually moving into fine press. The number of copies produced for each edition increased as well, from 10 to 55, roughly corresponding with the increase in contributors.
