Background

Scope and content:

The collection consists of published artists' books, mock-ups, proofs, excess overage, notes, drawings, linoleum and rubber stamp blocks and other ephemera. Most items included are the remnants of book projects undertaken by Wilde either personally or collaboratively. Some projects never resulted in a final, published work, so the archival material here is the only remaining evidence of its conception. Material unrelated to book projects documents Wilde's creation of the Artichoke Yink Press, Bookmobile, and Booklyn. Notable works featured are the Y Book, Tragic Book #8, My Really Old Cat, Starbook, and Water Under the Bridge.

Biographical / historical:

Artist and writer Christopher Karl Wilde, or C.K. Wilde, founded Artichoke Yink Press, an imprint for artists' books in 1993. Wilde represented and sold the artwork of other small presses through a book-selling tour called the Artichoke Yink Press Bookmobile. Bookmobile, the predecessor of The Booklyn Artists Alliance, was founded as an alternative market for contemporary, avant-garde artists' books to shift away from working with art dealers who focused more on traditional "fine press" titles. In 1998, Wilde moved Bookmobile to his Brooklyn apartment, at which point he, Marshall Weber, Dylan Graham, Kurt Reynerston, and other collaborators renamed it Booklyn. This collection represents the technical and aesthetic approaches that Wilde and his colleagues experimented with in the book arts. Artists featured most in this collection include Kurt Allerslev, Dylan Graham, Studebaker Livingston Hoche, Shon Schooler, Mark Wagner, and Marshall Weber.
