This collection consists of 5 albums of 477 drawings of stations from the 1870s and 1880s in California, Arizona, Nevada, and New Mexico. These drawings show the location and relative size of original station buildings for Southern Pacific Railroad and several of its precedessor companies, including: California Pacific Railroad, Central Pacific Railroad, Northern Railway, Stockton and Copperopolis Railroad, and San Pablo and Tulare Railroad.

Southern Pacific Railroad was incorporated in 1865: California Pacific Railroad and Stockton and Copperopolis Railroads began operations in 1865, Central Pacific in 1867,The San Pabo and Tulare Railroad Northern Railway in 1871, and Northern Railway in 1876. In 1870, Central Pacific and Southern Pacific railroads merged and were operated under the Southern Pacific Company. In the 1880s, the other railroads we leased by and eventually bought out by Southern Pacific. In 1996, Union Pacific Railroad bought the Southern Pacific, which ceased to exist.
