Meeting minutes, correspondence, membership rosters, memoranda, clippings, flyers, press releases, bylaws, and financial records
documenting activities of the Los Angeles Gay and Lesbian Press Association (LAGALPA), a member chapter of the national Gay
and Lesbian Press Association (GLPA), 1982-1984. LAGALPA was founded in 1982 to (like the GLPA) serve as a professional trade
organization advocating interests of gay and lesbian journalism. The collection primarily documents the LAGALPA's founding,
as well as its preparations for the GLPA's 1984 national conference, which was held in Los Angeles.
Historical Note
Founded in 1982, the Los Angeles Gay and Lesbian Press Association (LAGALPA) was a member/chapter of the national Gay and
Lesbian Press Association. "The purposes of LAGALPA shall be to promote the growth and improvement of the gay and lesbian
communications media; to stimulate the advancement and recognition of gay and lesbian press/media persons both within and
beyond the gay and lesbian communications media; to ensure and promote ethical standards of journalism; to encourage fair
and sound financial management and advertising practices; to foster an interchange of skills and resources; to increase understanding
and improve communication among gays and lesbians of all races within the community at large; and to protect and defend the
freedom and integrity of the press and other media."
