    Biographical / Historical

On January 14, 2019, United Teachers Los Angeles (UTLA), the teacher's union for the Los Angeles Unified School District (LAUSD) went on strike. UTLA was founded in 1970 by merging several teacher's organizations created to support the teachers working for the massive LAUSD, the second largest in the country. UTLA is currently organized into eight geographic areas. The last strike took place in 1989.
Carson High School is a member of the UTLA's Harbor area. The 20 signs gathered after the successful end of the 2019 strike were used by working teachers, retired teachers, students, staff and other local union members. Some are covered with plastic due to the heavy rains during the first days of the strike.
Some of the signs were created and distributed by UTLA, while others were created by teachers, students and members of other local unions.
The strike lasted six days, from Monday, January 14, 2019, through Tuesday, January 22, 2019. Union members voted on January 22, 2019, to accept the tentative contract reached during negotiations between LAUSD and UTLA. They returned to work on Wednesday, January 23, 2019. The new contract was unanimously approved by the LAUSD School Board on Tuesday, January 29, 2019.
