Description
The collection consists of items
related to the attempted resignation of Union Soldier Stiles E. Forsha from his position as
the Regimental Quartermaster of the 7
th Regiment, Iowa Infantry
in 1862. Materials in the collection include Forsha's letter of resignation, an attached
document forwarding and disapproving his request signed by five Union generals, and
photographs of those generals and Ulysses S. Grant's aide-de-camp.
Background
Stiles E. Forsha fought in the Civil War, entering the war as a First Lieutenant for the
7th Regiment, Iowa Infantry. In August of 1861 he was appointed Quartermaster, and in
November of 1862 he was appointed to Commissary of Subsistence of the United States
Volunteers. After the war, Forsha and his family moved, ending up in Southern California,
where he passed away in 1911.
