Dr. Herbert Kroemer (August 25, 1928 - March 8, 2024) was a German American physicist and Professor Emeritus of Electrical Engineering at University of California, Santa Barbara. He received the Nobel Prize in Physics in 2000 for developing semiconductor heterostructures used in high-speed- and opto-electronics. He also was awarded the Grand Cross of the Order of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany in 2001, the highest award given by the German government; the IEEE Medal of Honor in 2002 for contributions to high-frequency transistors, and hot-electron devices; and the Golden Plate Award of the American Academy of Achievement in 2001.

In 1952, Kroemer received his Ph.D. in theoretical physics at the University of Göttingen, Germany. Prior to joining the faculty at University of California, Santa Barbara; he worked at RCA Laboratories from 1954-1957 in Princeton, New Jersey; and Varian Associates from 1959-1966 in Palo Alto, California. From 1968-1976, Kroemer taught electrical engineering at the University of Colorado. In 1976, Kroemer became a Professor of Electrical and Computer Engineering with a joint faculty appointment in the Department of Materials. He became Professor Emeritus in 2012.

In 1997, Kroemer was elected as a member into the National Academy of Engineering for conception of the semiconductor heterostructure transistor and laser, and for leadership in semiconductor materials technology. He also became a member of the National Academy of Sciences in 2003.
