- Biographical / historical:
-
Judyl Mudfoot (1943-) is an active member of the arts community in Santa Barbara as a poet, author, editor and print-maker. In collaboration with editor and author Sasha Newborn, Mudfoot established Mudborn Press in 1975, characterizing the publishing company "as a vehicle for serious and non-derivative writing." The Mudborn Press published pamphlets, advertisements, books and booklets for businesses, organizations, and writers in Santa Barbara. Mudfoot would later install her own autonomous press (J. Mudfoot, Printer) occasionally providing her services for free to aspiring poets at fairs.
In 1976, Mudfoot and Newborn released the first issue of Rockbottom a monthly magazine dedicated to the publication of poetry and prose by artists and non-artists alike. Mudfoot published a number of poetry books, such as The December Book in 1975, which was a celebration of her beginnings at the Bluebird Cafe in Santa Barbara, an open forum where Mudfoot participated in monthly poetry readings. Other publications include Pomes in 1975, Presents: [poems] in 1977, and Masked Ball [Dreams and Disguises] in 1986, an autobiographical collection of poems reflecting on Mudfoot's identity as an American woman and writer.
In 1978, Judyl Mudfoot was a director of the Literary Publishers of Southern California, a book distribution cooperative that produced catalogs, broadsides, and other printed works, often sold at book fairs.
Mudfoot was also a prolific artist and designer, producing a number of stamps and postcards, and exhibited her work with her late husband, assemblage artist, Alver Herman Smith (1941-2017). Mudfoot produced non-traditional stamps by mounting various materials onto wooden boards, including tire treads.
