No. 9768. Off Cape Flattery, Washington, or Straits of Juan de Fuca, California. The vessel is outward bound for Shanghai, China. The National Park Service enclosure for the contact interpositive originally had "J7. 36,203" written on it as well, as it had been taken from this collection and cataloged as a Classified photograph. It was returned to this collection (P77-028a) in February 2013.

Scope and Content Note

No. 9781. Vessel is listing to the starboard side, water is almost over the bulwark. There is a launch off the port side. An unidentified forested coast is in the background. This is most likely early in 1923 when she left Kildonan, British Columbia, for Callao with lumber. On January 5, she was reported waterlogged, anchored in a dangerous position near Destruction Island, Washington. She was towed to Winslow to for repairs and completed the trip without incident. The vessel was built by James Hall at Port Blakely, Washington.

Scope and Content Note

No. 10851. There are four square-rigged vessels at anchor with other smaller vessels and the waterfront in the background. Notes from the corresponding photo album in HDC 1600, Series 12, indicate that one vessel is MOSHULU (built 1904; bark, 4m) and one is MONOGAHELA (built 1892; bark, 4m). It was indicated on the original National Park Service enclosure that the subject of the photograph was a four-masted bark, LAKE UNION, but it is likely that the scene is of Lake Union, Washington, instead. Although the names of the vessels cannot be read completely, it is unlikely that any are of named LAKE UNION.

A photographic print of this image is found in the SFMNHP Classified photograph collection, (J7.08983p); this enclosure states, "...during a run from Honolulu to Seattle in 1927." Scope and Content Note

The group is unidentified. The men are wearing suits and the ladies are wearing dresses and hats. The girl appears to be around four to six years old and is holding what appears to be a ukulele. STAR OF ZEALAND (built 1900; bark, 4m) is in the background. The photograph has '"Pier 54" written on the frame, but the location is unknown. The word, "Sa[ni]a" is partially visible in the background, painted on one of the buildings on the pier. Identifying information is written on the frame, outside of the image area.
