Biographical / Historical
The Cal Poly Pomona Downtown Center, which was open from 2000 to 2009, hosted educational
and cultural programs for both the youth and adults of Pomona. Cal Poly Pomona's College of
Letters, Arts, and Social Sciences established the center in 2000 in an effort to support
the revitalization of downtown Pomona and to offer programs that would benefit the
community. The effort was led by Barbara Way, the dean of the College of Letters, Arts, and
Sciences.
The Downtown Center offered technology training for teachers and local entrepreneurs; an
English as a Second Language program for students, which was offered in conjunction with the
Pomona Unified School District; and other educational and arts programs. The center was also
home to the Academy For Literacy Through the Arts, which held drawing, theater, film, and
other arts classes for youth. The classes were designed to teach students literacy and
communication skills, in addition to providing students with arts education. The Academy For
Literacy Through the Arts also hosted a Summer Arts Academy for middle school and high
school students.
Several art galleries were located at the Downtown Center, including a gallery that hosted
local and world-renowned artists. The artists were asked to donate a suggested 30-percent of
the proceeds from sales of their art to fund programs at the center. The center also
included a theater that held up to 90 people and a multipurpose room.
A lack of funding caused by a state budget crisis forced the university to end its
involvement with the Downtown Center in 2009. At the time, plans called for operations of
the facility to be turned over to the School of Arts and Enterprise, a charter high school
that moved into the Downtown Center in 2002.
