Background

Scope and content:

Five documents relating to John A. Fairchild's purchase of a ranch outside of Yreka, California. The first is a deed, dated 08/28/1863, for a parcel of land in Scott Valley, Siskiyou County, California, known as the "Lone Star Ranch" and signed by a notary public. The second is a 2 page, handwritten, Sheriffs Document of Sale, dated 04/02/1864, detailing the purchase of "A ranch in Scott Valley, said ranch being known as Star Ranch" by John A. Fairchild, who paid the sum of $94.50, and is signed by Daniel Ream, Sheriff. The third is a letter from John A. Fairchild to J.K. Luttrell, dated 09/18/1864, relating to some surveying work he had done in the Southwest 1/4 of Sec. 84 Township 44 Range 9 West Mount Diablo Meridian and North 1/2 of Sec. 3 Township 43 Range 9 Mount Diablo Meridian. The first parcel of land has a deed upon it by Julien (?) dated 1859 but the second parcel appears to be wrong on his map, as it should be located on a mountain. A short document is attached and signed by John A. Fairchild, J.K. Luttrell and J. Murray. The fourth is a 3 page tax deed, dated 12/30/1864, between David Ream and John A. Fairchild, signed by David Ream, detailing how John A. Fairchild came to purchase the Star Ranch in Scott Valley, Siskiyou County, California. Attached is an official seal from the Siskiyou County Clerk and Deputy stating that the tax deed is valid and binding. The fifth is an undated document outlining the people and documentation in a legal proceeding. John A. Fairchild is listed with Benjamin Porter and William Gray versus James Camp (?) and Hill Camp (?). No more details are given.
