Biography/Administrative History
Ron Ziel was born in 1939. He is an artist and a former U.S. Army officer and has been both a newspaper and magazine editor.
George Hoagland Foster was born in 1935. He has researched and written extensively on railroading and other maritime subjects.
Both Ron Ziel and George Hoagland Foster have published extensively in the field of railroad history.
•Begining in 1964, the two began making plans for the Sag Harbor & Scuttle Hole Rail Road, a tourist railroad to run along
the abandoned Sag Harbor branch of the Long Island Rail Road between Bridgehampton and Sag Harbor in Eastern Long Island,
New York. Robert W. Ward, the first General Manager of the railroad.
Scope and Content of Collection
This collection relates primarily to Ron Ziel and George Hoagland Foster's attempt to establish a tourist railroad, the Sag
Harbor & Scuttle Hole Rail Road. Material includes: correspondence, memoranda, clippings, contracts, invoices, freight bills,
bank statements and postcards. Correspondence illustrates efforts to interest financial backers in the project, material
and labor estimates for completion of the track, and negotiations for the purchase of Central of Georgia locomotives 403 and
408. A prospectus for the railroad is included, as well as publicity for the venture. Other files include information about
an excursion along the railroad, the railroad's financial affairs, and the search for a new General Manager for the railroad.
There is one folder of correspondence relating to Ron Ziel publications.
