Background

Scope and content:

This collection consists primarily of the recordings created and/or collected by Ed Sprankle. The bulk of the collection focuses on jazz music performances by Turk Murphy, Gene Mayl's Dixieland Rhythm Kings, the Great Pacific Jazz Band, Jelly Roll Jazz Band, and others associated with the San Francisco Bay Area Traditional Jazz scene from the 1950s through the 1980s. Some exceptions apply. There exists within the collection a complete series of recordings for the 1977 and 1981 Saint Louis Ragtime Festivals along with Sprankle's dubbed copies of vintage jazz 78 rpm discs and a small selection of rehearsal recordings featuring Italian conductor, Arturo Toscanini.

Acquisition information:
The Ed Sprankle Jazz Collection was donated to the Stanford Archive of Recorded Sound by Joan Sprankle in 2010.
