Background

Scope and content:

This collection of materials related to Port Costa downtown businesses includes a copy of the 1939 lease for the Burlington Hotel, Warehouse Cafe menus, photographs, newspaper clippings, and others.

Biographical / historical:

The community of Port Costa saw an economic boom in 1879, with the establishment of a ferry system between Port Costa and Benicia. As a result, a variety of businesses were established in the downtown region. In 1929, the ferry service disbanded, leading to an economic slump. While many businesses shuttered, several remained in operation. The 1960s saw a revival of downtown Port Costa when Bill Rich bought the whole of downtown for $24,000 and opened bars, restaurants, antique shops, and apartments. Clayton Baileyโ€™s The World of Wonders Museum opened in the 1970s.
