    Scope and Content of Collection

    The James E. Brackett papers include 91 photographs and Olive Brackett’s class notes and textbook attending Lee Ann’s Academy of Cosmetology in Oakland, California. Photographs are arranged by subject into four subseries: Brackett family photographs, military service, NAACP events, and assorted. A majority of the photographs document the home life of the Brackett family in the San Francisco Bay Area during the 1940s-1960s. Also included in the collection are photographs of James E. Brackett service at Camp John T. Knight [Oakland Army Base] during the 1940s and photographs of various NAACP events in the Oakland area in the 1970s. Olive Brackett’s cosmetology textbook and notes include head diagrams and instructions on hair and scalp treatments, perms, and coloring.
