Series I. Estudio Actual records, circa 1957-2003

Physical Description: 2.1 Linear Feet (5 Boxes, 1 Flat File folder)

Scope and Content Note

Estudio Actual was founded in Caracas in 1968 by Clara Diament Sujo in collaboration with the art critic and photographer María Teresa Boulton, and managed with the assistance of Rita Salvestrini, who would later become a prominent museum director in Caracas. Sujo and Boulton conceived of Estudio Actual as a non-profit center of contemporary art featuring an art library, bookstore, and gallery, which would be inaugurated with an exhibition dedicated to Marcel Duchamp. According to Sujo, Estudio Actual closed its doors in 1992 (see Cronología (1995)).
CDS Gallery incorporated within its own records documentation related to Estudio Actual. See Series II. A distinct group of materials related to Estudio Actual consists of documents on the center's incorporation, exhibition pamphlets, a scrapbook, and administrative files. The drawings and illustrated letters in Series IV primarily date from Sujo's period activity with Estudio Actual. Sujo's personal papers in Series III further document Sujo's work in Caracas, while she directed Estudio Actual.

Series II.B. Correspondence, 1983-2012

Physical Description: 30.02 Linear Feet (72 Boxes)

Scope and Content Note

The correspondence consists of letters to and from museums, galleries, collectors, private dealers, and auction houses. The bulk of the correspondence from and to artists was filed by CDS Gallery with another portion of the archive and is described in Series II.D. Artist files. The bulk of the correspondence related to the operation of the gallery or of a financial nature was also separate and is described in Series II.F. Administrative files.
CDS Gallery maintained its correspondence files in a highly formal and organized order. They were primarily organized in chronological order with color-coded labels: light purple (1996-1997); blue (1997-1998); light blue (1998-1999); black (1999-2000); green (2000-2001); green or white or red (2001-2002); red (2002-2004); green or white (2004-2005); dark blue (2005-2006); red (2007; 2008); white (2009; 2010-2012).
The bulk of the correspondence files was assigned letters or codes and organized in the following order: C (Collectors); G (Galleries); M (Museums); PD (Private Dealers).
The artists' correspondence dated from the 1990s and on was part of this scheme and was assigned the letter A, while later CDS Gallery integrated it with files related to the artists (Series II.D. Artist files). The artists' correspondence files follow a mix of alphabetical and chronological order, but never apparently followed the geographic filing that is prominent in Series II.
The main filing principle within each category, C, G, M and PD, rather than alphabetical, is geographic according to the following scheme: New York; New York State; US or National; International. For some collectors, such as Ricardo Cisneros, files were originally created for each chronological period, but later regrouped, under the collector's name.
There is some correspondence from the early 1980s in Series II.B with specific collectors, such as Manuel Flamenco (El Salvador), but it primarily appears within the exhibition files in Series II.C. There is also early correspondence with Jacobo Borges, Stephen De Staebler, and Pedro Figari in Series II.D.
For specific chronological periods, consult the following boxes: Box 21 (1996-1997); Box 22 (1997-1998); Box 23-24 (1998-1999); Box 25-29 (1999-2000); Boxes 36-40 (2000-2001); Boxes 41-47 (2001-2002); Boxes 47-55 (2002-2003); Boxes 55-58 (2002-2004); Boxes 59-66 (2004-2005); Boxes 67-70 (2005-2006); Boxes 71-75 (2007); Boxes 76-81 (2008). The years roughly span from one summer to the next, i.e. 2000-2001 corresponds roughly to the period from July-August 2000 to July-August 2001.

Series II.D. Artist files, 1981-2008

Physical Description: 25.45 Linear Feet (62 Boxes)

Scope and Content Note

This portion of the archive consists of several A-Z files in order of artist names. While there is some overlap in the contents of these files, one set is exclusively dedicated to letters to and from artists (Series II.D.1.B), while another one focuses on press reviews. Several sets of A-Z files gather visual documentation-photographs, transparencies and slides-on works handled by CDS Gallery (Series IID.2. Works). The main set of A-Z files (Subseries II.D.1.C, Box 149-174) focuses on artists rather than works, and includes documentation such as artist biographies, clippings and correspondence, but it is mixed in content and may also contain documentation that prominently appears in Series IID.2. Works. For artists that are represented in only one folder or file, that is in only one of the A-Z lists of files, that unique file may contain materials that is more typical of documents from the other lists.

Arrangement

Series II.D. Artist files is arranged in the following two subseries: Series II.D.1. Artists; Series II.D.2.Works.
